Gaurang with models
Gaurang and models at Lakme Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2016 at St. Regis

Superlative singing by Manasi Scott and supermodel Carol Gracias revealing her baby bump enraptured you at Gaurang’s ‘Calico’ show on the Sustainable & Indian Textile Day at Lakme Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2016 at St. Regis.
While Manasi set the trendy tone with her rendition of Indian jazz music, Gaurang paid reverence to the aesthetics of early 20th century Indian royalty and uniting traditional Indian textiles with vintage silhouettes.
As many as 40 models walked gracefully on the ramp and into your heart. The ensemble of 40 collections included 24 outfits and 16 saris. Each of those ensembles was crafted from exquisite hand-woven textiles in khadi, uppada and kota using the jamdani technique.
Yes, the jamdani weave did the talking for all the designer’s saris and gowns. Each had an interesting interplay of textures in the warp and weft. It was a beautiful display of jamdani craftsmanship using motifs, colours and detailing with box prints.
Drawing on various trends of this intriguing era, each piece in this collection evoked a unique nostalgia. The saris were draped in royal styles of 12 states and the gowns followed the silhouettes of the Belle Epoch period. Using 28 to 30 metres of fabric for one gown meant using fine, light fabric and deft tailoring.
